Emotions as defined are strong feelings derived from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationships. At any given point, each of us goes through a series of emotions that could be either positive or negative or a combination of both. At a fundamental level, all of us want to have positive emotions in abundance and want to get rid of the negative ones. Though the very first step to flush the negative emotions is identifying those emotions within us.

Often one negative emotion triggers more of those eventually creating a chain of negative emotions. These emotions could either dictate our behavior or become a hurdle for us in getting closer to our goals. In trying to gather my thoughts, ‘procrastination’ and ‘perfection leading to delay and distraction’ are the two negative emotions that I have experienced within myself.

Procrastination is a very common emotion in today’s fast-moving world. I think in today’s age and date, almost everyone has a to-do list and so do I. The question is how actively are we pursuing our to-do lists to scratch all the tasks at hand in order to make a fresh list or simply keep adding tasks to our lists to stretch it. In the urge to reach perfection, I procrastinate. Upon introspection I realize, a lot of boxes on my list are often unticked due to this reason.

Along with being my negative emotion, procrastination is a dreadful habit that prevents us from reaching our full potential. Our mind and body gives us endless excuses to procrastinate however, a single reason is enough not to do so. Forming a new habit and being consistent at it could be the key to overcome procrastination in small ways.

Another aspect of procrastination for me is trying to achieve perfection eventually leading to delay or distraction. Spending countless hours and often pushing my deadlines to dig up the perfectly packaged solution, and before I know it, the time I spent on searching for perfection already exceeded the time it could have been done the imperfect way. Also, some tasks loose the essence if not done well within time and there is only so much time a particular task deserves. Recognizing and accepting the negative emotions within us and then consciously working towards converting them into positive ones is the strategy. Let us identify and embrace our negative emotions and channel it to find innovative solutions to our problems.
